Fondant Popcorn…Looks So Real!

July 5, 2013

Last week at work I made fondant a popcorn box and real looking popcorn for a movie themed cake. It was a tedious process but in the end it looked like real buttered popcorn from the theater.

I had never made anything like this before but I found a great tutorial on how to form each popped kernel at the website posted below….

For the popcorn box I actually made four panels that I cut from white gumpaste and let them dry for 3 days. I should have let them dry one more day because they were still a little flimsy but they worked. I formed Rice Krispies Treats in the shape of the box, covered it in wet royal icing and stuck the panels on to form the box. I sealed the corners with red fondant and put stripes on the rest of the box to resemble the real thing. Last, a popcorn label was made with a edible image, attached to fondant and put on the box.
