Matte Black World Series Cake – Boston Red Sox CakeNovember 17, 2013
Yesterday, I made a really fun cake for a member of the 2013 World Champion Boston Red Sox team. I loved doing this cake because it was a total MAN CAKE. I usually create girly whimsical cakes that are bold and colorful but this cake was made to look like the popular color of “Matte Black.” I used black Satin Ice fondant and also used dark gray for the accents. The World Series Champions logo was an edible image that was printed in a gray scale. The image was originally in color with reds and blues and I used Photoshop to change the color into grays before printing.
The Red Sox logo, the little socks, were done in red to give the cake a pop of color. The contrast of the black and red was great.
I made the small replica World Series trophy out of Rice Krispy Treats, skewers and fondant. I used the silver spray color by Duff to evenly color the base of the trophy and the skewers. The flags and other accents were hand painted in gold luster dust. The real trophy has 30 flags representing each team in Major League Baseball. I only had 11 flags…I just wanted it to resemble the trophy.
I created baseball seams out of the dark gray fondant to make the second tier resemble a baseball. This was my favorite part of the cake!
