You Are My Sunshine Cake – 1st Birthday

January 19, 2014

you are my sunshine cakeThis week I made a really cute cake with a really cute smash cake to go with it.  The theme of the 1st birthday was “You Are My Sunshine.” I love this theme because it is so bright and cheerful with bold colors.  All week when preparing for the cake, I sang the song to my kids…over and over. I love that song!

The cake was a 9 inch vanilla with vanilla buttercream icing. It was covered in pink marshmallow fondant and decorated in fondant as well. The sunshine on top and the smash cake is normally made of rice krispies treats but today they were vanilla cake. I used the ball pan from Wilton and baked two halves for the sunshine body.

Everything on the cake was edible and was made 4 days prior to the cake delivery. Both sunshines were covered in yellow marshmallow fondant. The sun rays were also made of fondant but I made them 5 days before to ensure that they were dry and hard enough to stick in the cake. The eyes were made with round piping tips and layered to give them a cartoon look.  The smiley mouth was made with a large circle cutter. I only used one edge to press into the fondant and two little circle cutters to made the lines at the edges of smile.

Since I don’t own an airbrush machine, each ray was dusted with orange dust at the tips. The banner was also dusted to give it a really cool look.

I put light yellow stripes on the cake to mimic rays of sun from the sun cake.
